Welcome to the TWIDD, not THAT TWID from Bungie, but This Week In Destiny Drama. This is a new show where I ask “What are the Destiny community angry about this week?” because, there’s always something right? Today I’m going to get into the timegating of the brave weapons, plus the Luna’s Howl changes and the drama surrounding WHICH weapons are coming back with Into The Light. We’ll get into all that and more, on This Week In Destiny Drama.
If you enjoy this video, then subscribe for more Destiny content, plus you can let me know in the comments what makes you mad in Destiny right now, and maybe I’ll feature it on a future episode of This Week In Destiny Drama.
Well, it was all going so well. Into The Light has been partially revealed, with a new horde mode Onslaught coming to the game, plus we have some of the strongest and most popular weapons from Destiny coming back for this free update on April 9th.
Here’s the weapons that are returning:
Forbearance
Succession
Falling Guillotine
The Recluse
The Mountaintop
Hammerhead
Blast Furnance
Edge Transit
Luna’s Howl
Midnight Coup
Hung Jury SR4
Elsie’s Rifle
Now, we have a few points of drama to talk about. Timegated Weapons, which weapons are coming back, plus the reworked perks and weapon models.
First of all, let’s have a look at the weapons coming back. Most of them are pretty good, although there are a few outliers which have stirred up the drama in the community. Hung Jury SR4 is probably the most contentious weapon of them all, with many asking why this one is being brought back again, especially given it’s been available in Destiny 2 in the recent past. A couple of others have raised eyebrows, including Forbearance and Succession, given they are still available in the game right now, but they do require older expansions and going into a raid, which isn’t something everyone likes to do. Elsie’s Rifle also raised a few questions, although this is a nice nod back to Destiny 1.
Many people took to Twitter to out forward the case for other weapons coming back including Frostbolt and MyNameIsByf with alternative weapons including Conspirator, Oxygen SR3, No Feelings, Patron of Lost Causes. I also saw others bringing up Perfect Paradox, Saint-14’s shotgun. The original Black Hammer would have been a good one too, but I have a feeling we’re going to be seeing a craftable Whisper of the Worm in the next few weeks, so that wouldn’t have made sense.
The thing with bringing back a collection of ‘the best’ weapons is it’s always going to be subjective, everyone is going to have a difference of opinion. Largely I think Bungie got this list right. Recluse, Mountaintop, Hammerhead, Blast Furnance and Luna’s Howl, all very good choices. Edge Transit and Hung Jury probably are the biggest question marks for me, but let me know in the comments what weapons you would have preferred to see.
That brings us to Luna’s Howl, which is seeing some big changes, and has led to some people being pretty vocal about this change. Here’s what Bungie had to say about Luna’s Howl.
Originally this was a Precision Frame 180 RPM Hand Cannon, and the Magnificent Howl perk would let you two-tap on follow-up kills in PvP, driving massive amounts of players to engage with Competitive PvP when it launched as a pinnacle weapon. The blisteringly fast Time To Kill (TTK) was a bit over the top for the amount of effort the weapon required, so we reduced its rate of fire and redesigned the perk to have a higher reward for more effort than the original.
For this iteration, we’ve kept it as a Precision Frame, 140-RPM Hand Cannon, and redesigned the Magnificent Howl perk. (“The number of precision final blows before reloading affects the total rounds granted with increased range and damage. Precision final blows with Magnificent Howl active extend the effect for additional rounds.”) This will allow for those two-taps, but with more effort required, and the Precision Frame will still make it very easy to control.
Let me know what you think of the changes to Luna’s Howl.
Then we’ve got the biggest drama from the last week, and that’s timegating weapons. Bungie said this at the bottom of their article, talking about the Brave Weapons coming with Into The Light.
Half of these will be available starting April 9, including The Recluse, Hung Jury SR4, Succession, Edge Transit, Elsie’s Rifle and Falling Guillotine. The remainder will unlock one at a time each week through the week of May 21. The BRAVE Arsenal weapons will continue to drop from Onslaught after The Final Shape, but the limited-edition variants won’t be available after June 3, so go get them while you can.
This has seen a huge outpouring of anger and a backlash against Bungie. We have 6 weapons on release on April 9th, but then one is going to release each week until June 3rd, when the limited edition weapons are going away.
Here’s some reaction to this from Reddit
“Exactly this was suppose to bring back hype and player retention. It was looking really promising for what we were getting but then in the last few lines of print just kind of made me realized why I’m stepping away from this for now and after the final shape for good. They always have some bs thing going on with this game that prevents it from being amazing!”
“I was just telling my clan after the livestream that if Into The Light represents the direction they’re taking the game in, I’m all in. But then they timegate the damn weapons that we’re hyped about.”
“It really is night and day in how Bungie treats their players and how Arrowhead treats theirs. I mean, I’ve been playing Helldivers 2 and the fact I can get super credits by just playing the game and unlocking warbounds, basically battle passes, for currency I can earn is fucking amazing. I never have to fear about time gating as well since the warbound will always be there for me to unlock in the future, there is no FOMO. No matter how much I love Destiny 2’s gameplay, map design and raids, the constant costs and time gating made me quit.”
From Bungie’s perspective, I imagine they want players to keep playing Into The Light and not get all the weapons on the first day. From a players perspective, this means we’re not going to have much time to get the final weapon, or the limited edition weapons.
Let me now what you think about the timegated weapons in the comments.
