How to Unlock Cryo Archive in Marathon

Since launch, Bungie has teased the existence of a fourth map: the Cryo Archive. Set on the UESC Marathon, this is the true endgame experience. Yet, even when Cryo Archive finally unlocks, most players still won’t get in.

Access isn’t just about how far you’ve progressed. It also depends on your preparation, gear, and willingness to take risks. Bungie has set up several requirements that keep this content out of reach for casual players, and if you haven’t been getting ready, you might not qualify.

In this guide, I’ll explain what Cryo Archive is, how the community is working to unlock it, and what you should do now if you want to get in.

What Cryo Archive Actually Is

Cryo Archive is positioned as the toughest challenge in Marathon. Rather than a standard extraction, it’s more like a raid with tricky mechanics, tough enemies, and team-based encounters. The map is far more aggressive and punishing than any earlier maps, with highly geared players competing for the same top-tier rewards. Bungie has also hinted at complex puzzles requiring teamwork and problem-solving under pressure. It’s meant to test everything you’ve learned in Marathon so far.

Cryo Archive Requirements

To access Cryo Archive, you must reach Level 25. This typically takes 15 to 25 hours, depending on your efficiency and extraction success.

The second requirement is unlocking all six factions. This involves contacting each faction and viewing their intro cinematic. You don’t need to complete all quests, but you must complete the introduction quests and ”meet” all factions.

The key requirement is a minimum load of 5,000 credits per run. All gear, weapons, armor, and consumables must meet this value every time you enter—no cheap setups allowed.

The 5,000 credit loadout rule is what really sets Cryo Archive apart, because it changes how you play the game. In most extraction shooters, players try to avoid risk by using cheaper gear and doing rookie runs to maximise profit. Cryo Archive completely changes that approach.

Here, taking risks is required. You have to invest a lot just to join, and there’s no backup plan. Rook runs aren’t allowed, so you can’t enter with nothing at stake. Every run costs real resources, and if you fail, you lose everything you brought. This makes the tension much higher than on other maps.

This setup ensures only serious players can enter Cryo Archive, and it makes every encounter more intense. Every fight is more important, every choice matters, and every successful extraction feels like an achievement. It’s not just about skill now; it’s about whether you’re willing to risk your resources.

The Marathon ARG

Even if you meet all the requirements, you still can’t access Cryo Archive yet. That’s because Bungie has linked the map’s release to a huge, community-driven ARG that’s been going on since launch. It’s a team effort with thousands of players working together to solve puzzles.

These puzzles come in many forms, like decoding voice lines and symbols, navigating tricky digital mazes, and finding hidden terminals in the game. The ARG covers both the game and outside platforms, so players have to work together, share info, and solve clues in real time. It’s chaotic, collaborative, and one of the biggest things Bungie has done in years.

Right now, the Marathon community is very close to unlocking Cryo Archive. The ARG is almost finished, with six out of seven stages solved, and Bungie has started showing the map in the game. If you check the map selection screen, you’ll see Cryo Archive listed, but it’s still locked.

This clearly shows that the final step is almost here.

Our final task is to kill 500 million UESC, and we’re about 63% of the way there. I would imagine we’ll be done soon.

When that happens, Cryo Archive will finally be available, but only for players who meet the requirements.

Why Most Players Still Won’t Get In

Here’s something many people aren’t mentioning. Even after Cryo Archive unlocks, a lot of players still won’t be able to get in. Some won’t have reached Level 25, and others might not have unlocked all factions. But the biggest obstacle will be the 5,000 credit loadout rule.

That rule makes players really engage with Marathon’s economy. Many players won’t have enough resources or the confidence to risk so much gear on one run. And that’s the whole idea. Cryo Archive isn’t for everyone. It’s meant to be the top challenge, reserved for players who are fully committed and ready to take big risks.

How To Prepare

If you want to be ready when Cryo Archive opens, start focusing on a few key things now. First, aim to reach Level 25 as quickly as you can. Try to extract consistently and avoid risks that might slow you down.

Next, unlock all factions now so you don’t get stuck at the last minute. It’s easy to finish this step ahead of time rather than rush it later. Also, start planning your loadouts. You’ll need setups that hit the 5,000 credit mark but are still affordable enough to use more than once.

Finally, think about your team. Everything we know suggests that Cryo Archive will be very tough, and going in alone will likely put you at a significant disadvantage. Having a well-coordinated squad could be the key to winning instead of losing everything.

Cryo Archive is a major milestone for Marathon. It’s more than just another map; it brings together the game’s systems, community, and design ideas. Bungie has created something that combines progression, economy, and teamwork into a single endgame challenge.

The ARG is almost finished, the map is now visible in the game, and everyone knows the requirements. The only thing left is to solve the last puzzle. Once that’s done, the doors to the UESC Marathon will finally open.

And if you’re planning to step inside, make sure you’re prepared. Cryo Archive isn’t just tough; it requires planning, investment, and the courage to risk everything for the best rewards in the game.
