The end is in sight for Season of the Splicer, but we still have the mysterious ‘Epilogue’ slated for the end of the season, starting on August 10 and running until 23rd, which will be the final day of the season. Today I am going to go through what to expect from the Epilogue, so you’re up-to-date and know what to expect, plus run through some activities to finish up the season.
Although some of the info out there at the moment has been publicly available for some time, it’s worth shouting out a spoiler warning here if you don’t want to know anything going into the Epilogue and the final few weeks of the season. I’m going to be discussing activities and rewards, but if you want to come at this info fresh in-game, then we don’t have long to wait as the Epilogue content kicks off on August 10th, 2021.
Still with me? OK, let’s get into it.
As a high-level story recap for the season, we started off with Ikora working with Mithrax, an Eliksni Splicer, who can navigate through the Vex network. We needed their help due to the ‘long night’ that had descended over the Last City, the whole thing is enveloped in a Vex simulation, ensuring the sun wouldn’t rise in the Last City. Over the weeks we learned the ways of the Splicer and navigated to the center of the Vex network through Override and Expunge missions, revealing Quria at its core – the Taken Vex Hydra, who is under the command of Savathun.
Meanwhile, Lakshmi-2, leader of the Future War Cult, wasn’t very happy with the Eliksni being given refuge in the Last City and started waging a propaganda war via the airwaves. As the Endless Night dragged on this caused a rift in the Last City between Vanguard members and the leaders of the factions, leading us to the brink of Civil War in the Last City. This all played into the hands of the master of deception, Savathun. Our last interaction with the story content in Season of the Splicer left us defeating Quria, at the core of the Vex network, and the Endless Night lifted, just in time for Solstice of Heroes.
That’s where we left things, and now we’re approaching the Epilogue item on the roadmap. We still have 2 weeks left of the season, so the Epilogue will wrap up what has been a great season of story content. Let’s have a look at what we can expect from the almost two weeks of epilogue.
There is evidence outside the game that we’re getting one final Override mission in the Eliksni quarter, in the Botza District. This has been revealed through a banner image via the Bungie app, in particular, when looking for teams to run Override. This shows a huge Vex in the Botza District. There had been rumors or predictions for some time based on:
a) Lakshmi having visions about a battle in the Last City
b) The Eliksni quarter outside the Last City (which can be accessed through the H.E.L.M.) is the Botza District, which is a reused final boss encounter space from the Scourge of the Past raid. This seemed big enough for a battle, and it seems the final Override will be set here.
We also have the final page of the Beneath the Endless Night Lore book for the season. Before Solstice of Heroes, we were up to page nine of the lore book for the season. Unfortunately, there was a bug released in update 3.2.1 that allowed players to complete their lore books, however, August the 10th was the original date that was supposed to go in the game. Personally, I haven’t checked out that lore entry yet and I’ll be reporting on that when it goes live in the game. The epilogue will also be a great time to get your Splicer Title objectives done if you haven’t done so already.
There’s pretty good evidence to suggest we’re getting a final Override in the Last City, but it does beg the question, why would we do this? We have already defeated Quria, so it’s unlikely Quria will be back again (unless for some reason Quria isn’t dead, although it did seem to explode in dramatic fashion at the end of our battle). Smart money is on Lakshmi opening up a Vex portal inside the Last City at the moment, which would fulfill her own prophecy.
In terms of rewards we can see in the Destiny database there’s an Exotic Ship called Forbidden Memory supposed to be on offer sometime this season. We haven’t seen it yet, therefore it’s not a stretch of the imagination to think it could be a reward for taking part in the final Last City Override activity. There is lore attached to the Exotic Ship that details some kind of memorial in the Last City. We don’t yet know who the memorial is for, but it could be fallout from the attack on the Last City caused by the portal being opened up in the Eliksni Quarter.
In summary, it looks like we’re getting a final Override (possibly as part of a quest?), the conclusion to the story with Laksmi-2, Mithrax, Saint-14, and Ikora as well an Exotic Ship as a reward. Time will tell if events lead into Season 15, but I think the smart money is on a trailer on the 24th from Bungie, followed immediately by the content drop of the season much like Arrivals/Beyond Light.
We do have some outstanding questions to answer. What’s the deal with Osiris? Has Savathun been controlling him like a puppet for three seasons, and are we about to get a payoff in that story beat? We also had some random oracles show up at a random Lost Sector towards the start of the season, which Bungie rapidly patched out… but we’ve never had a payoff for that either. Could that be related? Also, will the epilogue lead us into Season 15?
There’s a big reveal on the 24th of August detailing what’s next for Destiny 2. it could be similar to last year where we had a Season of Arrivals plus Beyond Light ViDoc at the same time. We may end up getting a Season 15 trailer plus a Witch Queen teaser too, with it being released on the same day. Witch Queen is still further out in early 2022 given its delay earlier this year, allowing Bungie time to polish up the next major expansion.
That means Season 15 could run until the early months of 2022. It’s unlikely that Witch Queen is going to launch on 1st January 2022, meaning the final season of the Beyond Light story will run for 5 months if it lands in February and 6 months if it lands in March. I doubt we’re going to get an additional season, given the team is working hard on Witch Queen. This could mean extended seasonal events like The Festival of the Lost and The Dawning lasting much longer than usual, and plenty of Iron Banner.
Let me know down in the comments what you want for the end of the season, plus let me know what you’d like to see on the Witch Queen/Season 15 launch day. This is the most exciting time in Destiny, and we’re only a few weeks away from a trailer, and you know Bungie is going to bring the heat when it comes to the trailer. Personally, I can’t wait and I’d love to see your thoughts on what we’re going to see down in the comments.
