How to get Rat King (Exotic Sidearm) and catalyst in Destiny 2

Rat King is one of the best Sidearms in the game, plus its very easy to get if you have the right materials. With Rat King it’s super easy to become invisbible and escape your enemies, plus if you’re in a fire team of Rat King users, then you’ll all get increased damage. Today I am going to check out Rat King, how to get it, plus how to get the catalyst in Destiny 2.

Without further delay let’s have a closer look at Rat King.

Rat King

Rat King is an Exotic Kinetic Sidearm and it has the following exotic perks.

  • Rat Pack – This fully automatic weapon becomes stronger when nearby allies also have it equipped. Stacks up to 6 times.
  • Vermin – Reloading immediately after a kill grants a brief period of invisibility.

Looking at the stats we have Impact 49, Range 30, Stability 40, Handling 40, Reload Speed 40, Airborne Effectiveness 31, Rounds Per Minute 300, and Magazine 15

How to get Rat King

To get Rat King you can buy this from the Tower from the Exotic Kiosk, which you can find next to the Vault and it’s called Monument to Lost Lights.

Rat King will cost you:

1 Exotic Cipher
100,000 Glimmer
150 Legendary Shards
1 Ascendant Shards

You can get an Exotic Cipher from the Season Pass, or you can complete the quest from Xur – he’s around from Friday until Tuesday. I do a guide on Xur’s location each week, so make sure you subscribe and hit the notifications bell to never miss an update.

Glimmer can be acquired from pretty much any activity – strikes, gambit, crucible, public events, patrols, etc. You can also go to Spider and trade in materials for Glimmer, but don’t trade in Dusklight Shards as you’re going to need those for Thorn.

There are a few ways to get Ascendent Shards:

Purchased from Master Rahool in The Tower.
Dismantling masterworked legendary or exotic armor.
Possible reward for completing Master or Grandmaster Nightfalls
Possible reward for completing Master raid encounters.
Season Pass rewards.

Once you have all the materials then head back to the Monuments to Lost Lights in the Tower and purchase Rat King.

Rat King Catalyst

The catalyst gives an additional perk called Infestation. This provides 3 benefits:

Improve aim assist
Improve recoil direction
Triggering Vermin invisibility now refreshes health

Additional aim assist and recoil are great, but it’s the health regen that is most useful perk here. If you reload after a kill, then go invisible, then you’ll get your health back. This is particularly good for Hunters, and improves both PVP and PVE.

How to get the Rat King catalyst

This is a random drop from Nightfall strikes. We don’t know the precise drop rate, but it’s pretty rare. The best thing to do is have Rat King either in your inventory or in your vault, then run strikes and the catalyst will drop for you.

How to level up the Rat King catalyst

Before you can equip the catalyst you’ll need to level it up, and you’ll need to get 1000 fireteam kills with Rat King. This means you’ll need to be in a fireteam with someone who has Rat King, and they get kills, rather than you. You can team up with friends, or with someone via LFG who are looking to do the same thing.

The most efficient way to get this done is the Shuro Chi checkpoint in the Last Wish Raid, this is because tens of enemies spawn, and you can take them out nice and easily using Quicksilver Storm. It’s best to stock up on raid banners, and you can get these from Hawthorn in the Tower. I’ll put the route to the Shuro Chi location in the Last Wish Raid at the end of this guide, simply follow that, input the code at the wishing wall and you’ll be teleported to the farming location.

Altars of Sorrow is another good location, you can find this on the moon. The start of the Grasp of Avarice Dungeon is another good place, plus you have plenty of Lost Sectors all over the planets and the moons. Blind Well is another good alternative, which can be found on the Dreaming City. Ideally you want to run activities solo, so you can maximize the amount of enemies you are killing. Given you have to kill lots, you don’t want to be sharing kills in Vanguard Ops or any other activity, as that’s going to slow down your progress. If you want to get this done fast, get in there with solo activities and get those 1000 kills.

That’s it for Rat King. It’s great with void hunter builds, so I’d recommend trying that too.
