Tonics guide in Destiny 2

Progression in the latest episode of Destiny 2 has changed significantly, changing from the traditional upgrade grid to use the new tonic system. We collect ingredients (or reagents) from dead enemies to mix into tonics to enhance our abilities in battle. Today I’m going to run through a guide for how to use Tonics in Destiny 2.

Tonics help us in episode Revenant by target-farming loot, plus also enhancing artifact perks, allowing us to create better builds for endgame content like Nightfalls and Dungeons.

What are tonics?

Guardians can consume tonics to modify activity rewards and artifact perks. The tonic system combined with seasonal activities are the primary source of seasonal gear in Revenant, so it’s a good idea to get familiar with the tonic system early.

There are 2 types of tonics:

Volatile tonics: they enhance artifact perks with new properties
Enriching tonics: they modify activity rewards allowing for target farming of gear

Once you drink a tonic a timer of 20 mins starts. As you progress and get rarer tonics, the duration increases. Keep progressing and you’ll get stronger tonics which will allow you to further enhance your rewards. Tonics come in three rarities: Uncommon (green), Rare (blue), and Legendary (purple).

How to craft tonics

You’ll want to complete the introduction quest by speaking to Eido in the Last City, and she’ll run you through the basics of crafting tonics. However, it’s a new system and a lot of new information, so it’s going to take a little while to get used to the new system.

Here’s how to craft tonics:

In the Last City interact with the Tonic table, it’s right next to Eido
Select the tonic you want to craft
Reagents for the tonics are found in seasonal activities and quests
When complete exit the table menu
Walk to the cupboard and select ingredients
Interact with the tonic tester by the Fallen Walker, behind Eido
Activate to spawn the tonic
Tonics are crafted in batches, so you can make more than one.

How to use a tonic

All of your tonics are in your inventory tab, to the right of your character screen. Inspect the tonic capsule and that will bring up all your Volatile and Enriching tonics you have crafted. The tonic capsule is for drinking tonics and checking ingredients, you can’t craft tonics here. Select the tonic you want to use, activate it and the timer will begin. Activating a new one will override the old one.

How to get reagents

Reagents are the ingredients needed for tonics. They can be found in Revenant activities like Onslaught, which can be select from the Last City menu. Onslaught Salvation is a great source of reagents from dead scorn. Enemies don’t always drop reganets, it’s a random drop. If you need to resupply reagents then complete Eido’s Fieldwork quests. All minor quests give a small bundle of materials when you complete the task.

How to unlock new tonic recipes

New tonic recipes are discovered by crafting the same tonic multiple times. Every tonic has a green, blue and purple version. The rare (blue) and legendary (purple) versions arte unlocking by crafting duplicates of each tonic.

For example, the Tonic of Onslaught Gear is unlocked by default and grants you seasonal gear. If you craft 5-10 copies of the tonic you’ll get the Vintage Tonic of Onslaught Weaponry, which gives you a way of target farming Onslught weapons. Craft duplicates of the rare tonic and you’ll unlock a legendary variant.

There are 15 Volatile Tonics and 30 Enriching Tonics you can craft in Episode Revenant. Volatile tonics grow in strength and duration as the rarity increases, granting multiple artifact perk upgrades in one tonic. Enriching tonics allow you to target farm certain drops more effectively and for a longer duration.

Once you have your tonics then go into Onslaught: Salvation and get that loot.

Let me know what you think.
